MHS, FACS is 1 of 5 schools in Western North Carolina participating in a NCSU nutrition education program, Steps to Health-Cook Smart Eat Smart. Sue Estridge of NCSU Co-op. Extension Agent, FACS is presenting the program to FOODS 2 Class at MHS. The program is funded by the USDA. Information presented will include: 10 keys to cooking smart, food safety, food labels, and basic cooking techniques for steaming, baking, packet cooking, roasting, stir-frying, crock pot cooking, soups, salads, and salad dressings. Special Thanks to Sue Estridge for working with the Foods 2 class at MHS.

On Friday, the children in child care participated in a Trike A Thon to raise money for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. On Tuesday, April 12th we will be coming around the school during 2nd period to collect donations. At November 1, all CTE courses will begin using Thinkgate ELEMENTS,a web-based instructional management system that allows for total alignment of curriculum, instruction, and assessment through formative, benchmark and summative assessments. Elements provides data utilization for 1)improvement of instruction, 2) diagnostic planning, and 3) guiding of instruction that assists in continuous improvement and increased student achievement. Data reports will be available for school, LEA, regional and state levels. All CTE teachers will attend a general information session on Monday, November 1 at 3:00 pm. Training sessions will continue on Wednesday, November 3 during all planning periods.

New jobs coming to AdvantageWest region as German company locates its first U.S. manufacturing facility in Buncombe County

A German manufacturer of precision vehicle parts will locate a new production facility in the AdvantageWest region, with plans to create at least 79 jobs and invest $33 million over a 5-year period.

Reich LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Reich GmbH, is headquartered in Mellrichstadt, Germany. The new plant in Vista Industrial Park in Buncombe County will be the company’s first U.S. operation. The company is an international supplier of vehicle parts and special ball bearings. They produce gears and gear parts for transmissions, fuel injection system parts, and other precision parts for cars and trucks, as well as special ball bearings for use in power drills and office furniture.

“Reich GmbH is very excited to expand its operations to the United States with the establishment of Reich LLC in North Carolina,” said Christian Helfricht, General Manager of Reich LLC. “The Asheville area is centered among many of the top U.S. automotive suppliers, and North Carolina’s commitment to a strong business climate and job growth makes this state the best choice to locate our new facility.

“We would like to thank Gov. Perdue, the NC Dept of Commerce, the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce and AdvantageWest Economic Development Group, who introduced us to the Western North Carolina area and the wonderful people that have helped us to make the decision to choose Asheville for our U.S. location. We look forward to a very long and mutually rewarding relationship with the Western North Carolina community and the State of North Carolina.”

Lauren Froman’s Trip to DC

While in Washington Lauren went through tons of leadership sessions and was able to meet other state officers from all around the nation. They exercised their leadership skills in an activity called “A Quest for Leadership”. This was a huge scavenger hunt through the Smithsonian Museums in DC to discover what type of leadership that they held within their selves. Also on this trip they were able to meet our congressmen and got to speak with them about what HOSA is and the importance of HOSA. During all of this excitement they also got to speak with Senator Richard Burr and have a picture with him.

With the help of the district HOSA and National HOSA sponsors Lauren was able to have this wonderful experiences with no charge. Our chapter paid for her airline ticket but other than that it was no charge to her.

When Lauren returned from her trip, I had asked Lauren if she had learned anything from this experience and this was the response that I was given.

“Yes definitely! In a way it made me more outgoing and it was easier to meet new people there but I learned how to be a better leader, what kind of leader I am, and the importance of being a leader. I also learned lots of ways to help our chapter with things like membership, community service projects, and recognition for the members.”

Lauren is part of the North Carolina HOSA officer team. She and the rest of her officer group along with the advisor all traveled to Washington DC on September 11, 2010 and returned to NC on September 14, 2010.

Board Approves Legislative Platform: The NCACTE Board of Directors recently approved a legislative platform as follows:

North Carolina Association for Career & Technical Education
Legislative Platform
2011-2012 Biennium

NCACTE will continue to keep legislators and other policymakers informed on how Career and Technical Education positively affects increased graduation rates and lower dropout rates statewide. To accomplish this platform, NCACTE supports:

• Keeping in place, and preferably increasing, the current level of state funding for CTE. Such funding could provide local improvements, additional CTE directors across the state, and enhanced recruitment and retention efforts for CTE personnel.
• Ensuring that CTE is an integral part of dropout prevention funding.
• Pay increases for teachers and administrators.
• Legislation that requires the State Board of Education to add a required Career Cluster/CTE Concentration as a part of the future ready core graduation requirement.
• Legislation to increase the funding formula for CTE programs from grades 8 through 12 to grades 6 through 12.
• Legislation that would require each Local Education Agency (LEA) in North Carolina to have a licensed CTE director at the central office level.
• Legislation that promotes inclusion of Career and Technical Student Organizations within the Career and Technical Education curriculum.

"Our legislative platform for the next legislative biennium has not changed much and our efforts will be centered around addressing funding and other issues that CTE will face in our state," said Aaron Fleming, chair of NCACTE's Legislative Committee. The NC General Assembly convenes its long session on Jan. 26, 2011.

Feds Help Teaching Jobs: The federal government has sent the state $300 million to help save teachers' jobs. The move comes at a time when North Carolina hasn't had the massive teacher layoffs of other states. "Many school systems, with the state's help, have their bills paid for the year," said Mark Johnson, a spokesperson for Democratic Gov. Beverly Perdue.

On Thursday, state officials scrambled to get clarification on exactly what can be done with the federal windfall. The word from Washington is that a lot can be covered with the funding. The state has until Sept. 30, 2012, to spend the cash, which can be used for salaries for most education jobs outside of administrative positions. There are no restrictions on using the money as a substitute for already approved state spending.

"Our first priority is to bring back the folks who were laid off," Johnson said. "Beyond that, we need to review our immediate needs and our potential needs for next year." It's no surprise that a huge pot of cash coming into the state has officials and interest groups thinking about where to spend it. But there are reasons to hold back. Next year, the budget is projected to have a $3 billion deficit. That figure is nearly 15 percent of state spending.
State School Superintendent Weighs In: Superintendent of Public Instruction June Atkinson said the funds would be beneficial in these tough budget times. "We have yet to find a solution for the cliff we're going to face," she said. State budget writers spared education from the worst cuts this year, but Atkinson said the money could still be used to cut class sizes and restore high school courses that some districts eliminated.
State Health Plan Update: The additional tax money needed by the State Health Plan for the next biennium is rising. Mona Moon, the plan's chief financial officer, told a legislative oversight committee on Thursday that the plan is now projected to require an additional $572 million from the General Fund for the two-year period beginning July 1, 2011. Overall plan costs are expected to rise 10.7 percent for the period. Another $145 million would be kicked in through higher dependent premiums.

In June, plan officials had projected the additional taxpayer cost at about $400 million. Moon told members of the Joint Committee on Hospital and Medical Benefits that costs are also slightly higher than projections for the current fiscal year. She said the plan still had $122 million in cash reserves at the end of the 2009-10 fiscal year and projected to have $116 million by the close of the current fiscal year. The total equals about two weeks of the plan's operating expenses, less than the month's worth that administrators prefer, Moon said.

Education Leader to Retire: After nearly 25 years leading the Public School Forum, John Dornan is retiring. Dornan recently told the group's board of directors that he planned to give up his post as executive director early next year. Dornan said that before leaving he wanted to complete ongoing Forum studies examining teacher quality and a seamless system of dropout prevention.

"After 25 years, it will be a good thing. It's time for some fresh eyes," Dornan said. Dornan said that he might continue working in a limited capacity for the education think tank, but that he also planned to write a book with former New York Times education writer Ted Fiske. The book will examine lessons learned from education systems in other countries.

Home Schools Increasing: The number of home schools in the state has more than doubled in the last 10 years, according to the state Division of Non-Public Education. The division reported Monday that the state had 43,316 home schools in the last school year, up from 16,623 in the 1999-2000 school year. The division estimates that 81,509 children are home schooled. The non-public education division, part of the N.C. Department of Administration, monitors conventional private schools and home schools.

Drafting Class work on School Improvement Project

The area in front of the cafeteria is a popular place to sit and eat lunch. The seats and tables are less enough when the weather is nice.

Mr. Sprinkle's Drafting 1 students began a process of redesigning this area by measure and creating some detailed sketches.

Architectural student Micheal Beasleay and Amanda Silver took the sketches and developed a detailed drawing that could be provided to all the stake holder for consideration.

Madison High HOSA students are hosting a BBQ Dinner on Friday March 5. The price is $8.50 and includes BBQ pork, slaw, baked beans, roll and dessert. You can dine-in or get take-out. If you would like to purchase tickets email Mrs. Mackey or myself and we will put your names down.

HOSA students are trying to raise money to match a grant they recieved. The grant is for $2,000 dollars but that amount must be matched. If you would like to make a donation instead of having dinner, email Mrs. Mackey or myself as well.

Because of the weather, HOSA students haven't been able to advertise as much as they would have liked. Hopefully this email will get the word out a little better.

Please congratulate Becky Brookshire and her sidekick, Jennifer Greene on successfully starting the first ever, Junior FFA chapter in Madison County. The organization was congratulated by the Board of Education last night. Collin Robinson, the Junior FFA chapter president did a wonderful job as he stepped up and spoke to the Board! Much recognition was given to the MHS FFA chapter, officers, and advisors for their support and assistance with this groundbreaking effort.

The chapter has already attended their first competition and have plans to attend more competitions before year-end. These competitions not only develop student leadership skills, but also require students to test and perform on SCOS competencies from their coursework. They are excellent opportunities for students to realize the importance of core academics and technical development as they are required to use science, math, english and often social studies in their competitive events just as they will when they eventually enter the workforce.

Congratulations and thank-you to Ms. Brookshire and Ms. Greene for being willing to offer our middle school students this opportunity.

I want to thank everyone for a great year for Operation Santa. MHS staff, students and clubs raised about $2000 in cash, gift card, toys and food. Your generosity gave 38 families a Christmas this year. To be honest, I didn't think we were going to be able to help that much but MHS came through with the largest donation in the past three years. Dr. Tommy Justus informed us that MHS helped with almost half of this year 's budget. The family names come from each school in the county. Coats and clothing were provided for each child(along with toys,of course). For your information, more high school age children were served this year.
Thank you to Dr. Tipton for wanting MHS to undertake this service project for the past three years.
Enjoy the rest of our Christmas break and Happy New Year to all. I hope everyone has power back on at your homes.

Operation Santa

December 1st is the kick off date for Operation Santa! New unwrapped toys and nonperishable food will be collected and may be placed in the library, Brad Sprinkle's room or Karen Blevins' room. Students will come around to classrooms to take donations of money. If you or your club would like to donate money and write a check, please make it out to Madison High School. Gayla will put it into an account and write one check to Operation Santa. Last year Operation Santa was able to help 40 families in Madison County. Madison High raised $1500 plus toys and food items. Our hope is we can raise the same or more!! Thank you for everything you do.

On Thursday November 12th, 2009, Madison High DECA participated in Regional Competition at the Ashville Mall. DECA participated in Apparel & Accessories Marketing, Quick Serve Restaurant Management, Retail merchandising, and Sports & Entertainment marketing.
In Apparel & Accessories Marketing, the overall finalist was Jaycie List. The highest role play was awarded to Ashley Proffitt
In Quick Serve Restaurant Management, Gil Henry and Chris Raines had the highest exam scores. High role play was awarded to Lynzie Shuford-Clark and Chris Raines. The overall Finalists were Lynzie Shuford-Clark, Chris Raines, and Gil Henry.

The series winners were 1st place Lynzie Shuford-Clark, 2nd place Chris Raines, and 3rd place Gil Henry.

In Retail Merchandising Katie Johnson and Jessica Treadway had the high exam scores. Katie Johnson also had the highest role play as well. The overall Finalists were Anna Horrell, Jessica Treadway, and Katie Johnson.
In Sports & Entertainment Marketing Aleisha Reese was the highest role play.

As the vice president of TSA, I was presented with the unique opportunity to participate in the Leadership Academy of 2009. Based on the principles of leadership and career advancement through appearance, professionalism, and first impressions, the program provides an intriguing insight into the complex world of life beyond school.
The program itself consisted of various comprehensive activities. With lectures, audience participation activities, and even a delectable lunch provided by the Biltmore Estate, the Academy was not only a great learning activity but it was also an entertaining experience. And lead by a highly esteemed collection of individuals, and Biltmore’s own staff, it should go without saying that it was a program worth attending.

SACS/AdvancED –

Oshen Wallin presented the ranking sheet from the Quality Assurance Review Team. Members were asked to have each member of their department complete the form and turn them in to her as soon as possible.

Review Guideline for Field Trip Permission Forms –

Members were reminded to make sure their department was sending out a field trip roster form by e-mail prior to all field trips.

Flower Fund/Cards Update –

Members decided that a list would be posted at the beginning of the year to allow members of the faculty to decide whether or not they wanted to participate. Birthday Cards, Sympathy Cards, etc. will be the responsibility of the School Climate Committee.

Attendance Calendar –
Hannah Sams presented the Attendance Remediation Sign Up Sheet and Calendar. Motion made by Brad Sprinkle to approve the as written. Motion seconded by Carla Schneider. Motion passed. Keri Payne requested that Madison High School make a Connect Ed phone call to notify parents about Attendance Remediation.

Committee Reports –

Student Success Report – Oshen Wallin is working on a grant for next semester’s A-B Honor Roll. Members are working on small prizes to raffle at the A-B Honor Roll Celebrations.

School Climate – December 18th (1:00 pm) will be the only ½ day available for the faculty meal. Mrs. Mackey will offer steak/chicken, potato, salad and a roll for $10.00. Faculty members will be responsible for bringing dessert. Mary Kate okayed the use of the cafeteria (china, dishwasher, etc.).
Motion made by Brad Sprinkle to have the faculty meal. Motion seconded by Ginger Herron. Motion passed. This motion is pending Dr. Tipton’s approval.
There will be three committees: set up, decorations, clean-up. The School Climate Committee will e-mail faculty members to see who is on what committee.

Administrative/Technology Committee – Individual teacher is responsible for what they are allowing their students to call them. If a teacher is letting students call them by first name, that’s okay. Members of the committee were asked to look over the School Improvement Plan and report to the next SIT meeting if there needs to be a revision made for the current year.

Madison FFA Makes History

The streets were filled with blue corduroy jackets as the Madison FFA chapter arrived in Indianapolis, Indiana to represent Madison High School at the 82nd national convention. Goals had been set, and the intentions were boldly displayed as the Chapter brought home the gold, silver, and bronze medals from various competitions.
Alyssa Ramsey made chapter history as she is the first Madison FFA Member to ever place in the top four on the national level. She also received a 1000 dollar scholarship for her hard work. Alyssa placed third in the nation with her speech entitled “Thank You, Opec”. In her speech Alyssa stressed the importance of utilizing biofuels in order to protect our environment, and break our dependency on foreign oil. She was then required to answer 5 minutes worth of questions on the topic.
The 2009 Ag Issues team was 1 of 38 teams to represent their state in the National Agricultural Issues Forum. The Team returned with bronze medals for competing in their event. The team delivered their strongest presentation ever in the preliminary round and just barely missed advancing into the next round. Their topic for discussion was “Urban Land Sprawl vs. Farmland Preservation”. Team members included Austin Ledford, Jacqueline Hensley, Katie Johnson, Daniel Franklin, Heidi Roberts, Jill Peek, and Jesse Coomer.
The Madison FFA Band performed several times throughout the week. All of their performances were part of the long and vigorous process to play on the “Big Stage”. 18 acts were chosen from their audition tapes, and live performances to perform on Thursday, October 22nd. The Madison FFA band was selected and performed in front of a crowd consisting of more than 20,000 people. The Talent review was also broadcasted live on RFDTV. Band members were Samuel Adams Jr., Alex Robinson, Jacque Hensley, Tayler Chandler, Travis Wallin, and Samuel Adams Sr.
The Horse Evaluation team placed 21st in the nation. Chris Mackey was 3rd in oral reasons, and 8th overall. The team members judged 12 classes of horses, then were required to give four sets of oral reasons on why the classes were placed in the order they were. Team members were Jennifer Hensley, Chris Mackey, Dean Fox, and Ben Rice.
A special thanks goes out to the chaperones of the trip Melissa Chandler, Kathy Hensley, Ricky and Lisa Ramsey, Ms. Donna Worley, Keith and Liz Rice, Ruth Ann Lewis, and Samuel Adams. On Tuesday October 6th, 2009 sixteen members of the Madison High FFA Chapter traveled to DuPont Forest, Brevard to represent their chapter and compete in the North Carolina West Region Forestry Competition. The Senior team placed first in the region. Team members consisted of Daniel Alvey, Matthew Ray, Jennifer Hensley, and Dean Fox. Daniel Alvey was the high scoring individual in the senior division. The Junior Team placed fifth in the region. Team members consisted of Jake Freeman, Brittany Waldroup, Maegan Barnes, and Henry Seiler. There were eight other members who competed in the contest as well; Hannah Cutshall, Ashley Johnson, Spencer Morgan, Hannah Robinson, Dustin Randall, Chase Ramsey, Sierra Clark, and Anisha Sharpe. The Senior team will travel to Raleigh in June to compete at the 85th North Carolina State Convention.

Trike-A-Thon

Marshall, NC (5/22/09) – Madison High School Child Care Center participated in the St. Jude Trike-A-Thon program and raised $1,100 to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital®, the premier center for the research and treatment of childhood cancer and other catastrophic diseases.

More than 17 children participated in this fun, week-long program while learning riding-toy safety lessons and raising money for St. Jude. The week ended with the participants bringing their trikes and riding-toys to school and practicing the rules they learned. The Marshall community sponsored participants by pledging an amount-per-lap the children rode or a one-time donation.

“It’s fun to see the children get excited about learning,” said Mrs. Nicole Hollifield, coordinator of the event. “They love the interactive lessons that feature characters, Bikewell Bear® and Pedals the Bunny™. The St. Jude Trike-A-Thon also gives me the opportunity to teach the children valuable safety lessons while also helping children who are battling cancer.”

Upon completion of the St. Jude Trike-A-Thon the children won prizes ranging from Trike-A-Thon T-shirts to Bikewell Bear or Pedals the Bunny plush toys.

Madison FFA hosts Annual FFA Banquet

On May 21, 2009 the Madison FFA Chapter held their Annual Spring Banquet to celebrate all the many successes that our chapter had this year. Achievements included, over twelve top three finishes including the Creed Speaking, Public Speaking, and Extemporaneous Public Speaking events. Parliamentary procedure, Livestock Evaluation, Horse Evaluation, Nursery Landscape, Introduction to Horticulture, Quiz Bowl, Agricultural Mechanics, and Envirothon. We also had the privilege to recognize eight top three proficiency awards. In an effort to show our members exactly how much we appreciate them several individuals were rewarded for all of their hard work this past year with the point club system. Members of the 500 point club include Taylor Chandler, Jesse Coomer, Golda Dixon, Chelsea Franklin, Kassi Justice, Austin Ledford, Jessica Norton, Kysaundra Phillips, Amber Rice, Amanda Riddle, Gina Shelton, Mckenzie Chandler, Marie Mace, Chase Ammons, Joe Nash, and Ashley Johnson. Students that reached the 1000pt club included Amy Ball, Myra Franklin, Jacob Harwood, Bill Jones, Wilma Metcalf, Chelsea Pomeroy, Matthew Ray, Heidi Roberts, Haley Shelton, and Shana Young. Members of the 2000point club include Daniel Franklin, Jacque Hensley, Hannah Robinson, and Katie Terry. The 3000point club level was reached by Ben Rice, Chris Mackey, Samantha Kindred, Dean Fox, and Daniel Alvey. Only one member was able to reach the 4000point club, and that was reached by Jennifer Hensley. There was also only one student to reach the 6000 point club level and was also the recipient of the Jack C. Cole Award and that was Alyssa Ramsey. Several Individuals were also rewarded with Chapter and Greenhand degrees. The Star Greenhand Award is given each year to the most active Freshman. This year not only one Freshman was awarded but two, Hannah Robinson and Bill Jones. Scholarship Awards were also given to the individuals of each grade who held the highest GPA for their grade. The Freshman recipient was Hannah Robinson. The Sophomore recipient was Heidi Roberts. The Junior recipient was Ben Rice, and the Senior recipient was Hailey Shelton. With the 2009 year now at a close we had to bid adieu to our fellow officers which we are so close to. Retiring officers included Co-Presidents Wilma Metcalf and Christopher Mackey, Secretary Amy Ball, and Reporter Samantha Kindred. Stepping up to fill their positions for the 2009-2010 officer team With Co- Presidents Daniel Alvey and Alyssa Ramsey, Vice President Ben Rice, Secretary Katie Terry, Treasurer Jennifer Hensley, Reporter Jacque Hensley, Sentinel Jacob Harwood, and Historian Dean Fox. There was also a new officer team including President Hannah Robinson, Vice President Bill Jones, Secretary Mckenzie Chandler, Treasurer Austin Ledford, Reporter Ashley Johnson, and Sentinel Jesse Coomer. We will miss all of our retiring officers and we look forward to the bright new year with our brand new team. The Madison FFA Chapter would like to thank all of those who have helped our chapter in the past year. We would like to thank the Madison High School administration, the parents, our agricultural education teachers, and especially our members who have helped us to achieve a wonderful year. We would also like to thank you, our supporters for always being there when we need help, and supporting us in our annual plant sale.

Trike - A - Thon

On Friday, May 22, 2009 the children in the Child Care Center will be participating in a Trike - A - Thon to raise money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The children would like to ask the high school students to help sponsor them by donating money.

At the first of 2nd period on Thursday we will be walking around the school to collect money that your class has collected. Please put the bottom part of this sheet on your door if you have any money. We will not stop by your room if you don’t have the sign up. This way we will not be disturbing anyone’s class. The St. Jude Trike - A – Thon program teaches children riding-toy safety while also raising money for the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Seven members of the Madison High School DECA (Distributive Education Club) along with the two advisors departed for Anaheim, California on Tuesday, April 28th for International DECA Competition consisting of over 16,000 students. Each member felt that it was an honor to be able to represent North Carolina DECA and bring home four Awards of Excellence. Not only was the trip an exciting opportunity to expand leadership skills and knowledge of the business world, these nine individuals practiced their public relation skills while dealing with numerous complications with the flight back home.
Ms. Tammy Brown and Mrs. Michelle Gilmore are the advisors of the DECA organization at Madison High. Jessica Treadway and Anna Horrell received an award of excellence for competing in the Buying and Merchandising Team Event. Jesse Davis and Lauren Brigman also received this award in the Hospitality Services Team Event. Jerry Chandler and Aaron Rapp participated in the Senior Management Institute where they were able to further their knowledge of the business world by meeting with corporate executive officers from various companies. Kayla Bailey was one of eleven students chosen to represent North Carolina as a voting delegate for electing the 2009-2010 National DECA Officer Team. After the competition and leadership sessions were concluded, the group was able to tour several of the hot spots such as Disneyland, Hollywood, and Beverly Hills. Jesse Davis says that the trip was “well worth all the hours of dedication to the organization.”
When it was finally time to make the journey back to North Carolina, the nine individuals experienced a bit of difficulty which often comes with traveling by air, as I am told by my Reverend Steve Honeycutt, who is an experienced frequent flyer. As the group was set to depart at 9:45 p.m. on Sunday, May 3rd, this flight was cancelled due to weather conditions. Seeing as how there was not another flight until the next morning, an extended stay in Orange County was required. After much persistence and patience, the group departed at 8:45 a.m. the following morning thanks to one gracious lady who sacrificed her seat on the flight so that all nine individuals could travel together. After suffering through another delay in Atlanta, the group began to question if flying was the quickest route home. With their feet finally on the ground late Monday afternoon, the DECA members were glad to see familiar faces once again.
It is safe to say that this travel experience is one that will never be forgotten and that each person overcame the hurdles of traveling while maintaining tact exhibiting a positive attitude. Once again, the organization would like to extend a thank you to all business and individual sponsors who helped to make this trip possible.

Madison High Competes at West Region FFA Rally

On Thursday, April 31st, the Madison High FFA traveled to Haywood Community College to participate in the annual West Region FFA Rally. More than 470 FFA members, advisors, and guests were present at the competition. To start the day off, Western Region FFA President Chris Mackey welcomed everyone and called the Rally to order. Teams competed in several Career Development Events, including Introduction to Horticulture, Nursery Landscape, Quiz Bowl, Agricultural Mechanics, Parliamentary Procedure, Extemporaneous Public Speaking, Prepared-Public Speaking, and Creed Speaking.
In the afternoon, while everyone was waiting for the results of the contests, talent groups performed from across the region. Madison had two groups present on stage; the first talent group, with members Hannah Rice, Amber Rice, Ashley Worley, Golda Dixon, Kysaundra Phillips, Billy Amerson, Travis Wallin, and Samantha Kindred, performed Famous in a Small Town by Miranda Lambert. The second talent group, consisting of Jacque Hensley, Taylor Chandler, Heidi Roberts, McClellan Patterson, Travis Wallin, and Billy Amerson, performed Sweet Child of Mine by Guns and Roses. After the talent presentations, the Madison FFA Agricultural Issues team, consisting of team members Daniel Franklin, Katie Terry, Jill Peek, Heidi Roberts, Katie Johnson, Jesse Coomer, and Jacque Hensley, presented there forum on rural land preservation versus development. After this presentation, the retiring Regional officers announced the rankings of the chapters for Career Development Events that had been held prior to and during the Regional Rally.
Madison received recognition for several competitions that were held prior to Regional Rally. In the Dairy Evaluation contest the senior team placed first in the region with team members Ben Rice, Katie Terry, Dean Fox, and Samantha Kindred. The junior team, consisting of Jennifer Hensley, Bill Jones, Myra Franklin, and Kaitlyn Lisenbee, also placed 1st in the region. In the Livestock Evaluation competition the senior team placed 1st in the region, along with the junior team who was also 1st in the state. Senior team members were Daniel Alvey, Dean Fox, Jacob Harwood, and Samantha Kindred. The junior team included Jennifer Hensley, Bill Jones, Robert Taffer, and Hannah Robinson who was also high scorer in the region and state. The senior team, with members Dean Fox, Alyssa Ramsey, Chris Mackey, and Samantha Kindred, placed 1st in the region, as well as the junior team, which included Jennifer Hensley, Jill Peek, Bill Jones, and Jacque Hensley who was also 2nd high scorer at the state level. The senior Land Judging team placed 3rd in the region, with members Ben Rice, Chris Mackey, Jacob Harwood, and Wilma Metcalf. In the Forestry competition, the senior team, consisting of Daniel Alvey, Matthew Ray, Dean Fox, and Jennifer Hensley, placed 1st in the region. The junior team also placed 1st in the region with members Katie Terry, Hannah Robinson, Daniel Franklin and Ashley Mace who was high scoring individual in the contest.
There were several contests held at Haywood Community College in which the Madison competed. The senior Parliamentary Procedure team, with members Daniel Alvey, Chris Mackey, Ben Rice, Jordan Reese, Wilma Metcalf, and Samantha Kindred, placed 2nd in the region. The junior team, including Daniel Franklin, Jennifer Hensley, Jacque Hensley, Bill Jones, Heidi Roberts, and Kassi Justus, placed 1st in the region. Jacob Harwood, who competed in the Extemporaneous Public Speaking event placed 3rd in the region. Prepared Public Speaker, Alyssa Ramsey, placed 1st and Creed Speaker, Hannah Robinson, placed 2nd in the region. Quiz Bowl Team A, with members Bill Jones, McKenzie Chandler, Ashley Johnson, and Chase Ammons placed 2nd in the region, followed by Quiz Bowl Team B, consisting of Jesse Coomer, Joe Nash, Taylor Searcy, and Marie Mace, who placed 3rd. The Introduction to Horticulture team, including Golda Dixon, Kysaundra Phillips, Gina Shelton, and Aysha Dillion, placed 2nd in the contest. Madison also took and alternate team for Introduction to Horticultre with members Myra Franklin, Amber Rice, Jessica Norton, and Brittany Griffin. The Agricultural Mechanics team, which included McClellan Patterson, Daniel Burry, Taylor Chandler, and Amanda Riddle, placed 2nd in the region. Teams that placed in the top 3 in the Region are eligible to compete at the State FFA Convention to be held in Raleigh, NC, June 23rd – 26th.
Chris Mackey received 1st in the region and state for his Beef Production Entrepreneurship Proficiency Application, which in turn qualified for the National competition. Alyssa Ramsey also received 1st place for several of her proficiency applications, including Agricultural Communication, Agricultural Education, Agricultural Sales, Diversified Crop Production, Floriculture, Vegetable Production, and Diversified Horticulture which placed 1st at the state level and has qualified for national competition.
After the presentation of awards, the 2008-2009 retiring West Region officer team installed the newly elected 2009-2010 officer team. Retiring Regional officers from Madison include Chris Mackey, President, and Wilma Metcalf, the West Region Secretary. Daniel Alvey was installed as the West Region President, followed by Alyssa Ramsey who is the upcoming West Region Vice President. Congratulations to everyone who participated at the annual West Region FFA Rally and good luck to the 2009-2010 Regional officer team!

On April 9 Madison High School FFA hosted the Western region FFA officer interviews. Fifteen students fom across the region attended this event to interview and submit resumes for eight State Regional Officer positions. Out of the eight officer slots filled, two Madison high school students were chosen to serve on this State Officer Team.

Daniel Alvey recieved the position of president and Alyssa Ramsey received vice president. This is the second year in a row that Madison High School has held the regional president position. Chris Mackey is the outgoing Western Region FFA President.

This group continues its tradition of excellence and we thank them for their hard work and representation of our school and our county. Congratulations!

Congratulations to the following teachers and students who are being recognized as "High Flyers" in the Western NC Region for "Technical Attainment" as indicated by 2007-2008 CTE Post-Assessment data. These teachers and students were among the top three highest performing programs in WNC with 100% of Horticulture II students and 93.3% of Metals Manufacturing II students achieving proficiency or advanced level on statewide postassessments in 2007-2008. This performance indicator data was released at a regional meeting held yesterday in Asheville.

Madison High DECA Headed to Anaheim, California!

On Wednesday March 4th, 27 Madison High DECA members departed for Greensboro for the annual State Competition. They arrived back on Saturday, March 7th with countless trophies and medals. Out of the 27 competitors, seven qualified to attend the National DECA Competition, held in Anaheim, Calif., April 28th – May 3rd. This number is the highest for Madison High DECA as well as for the region, as students competed against over thousands from across North Carolina. Efforts are currently underway to make this exceptional opportunity a reality for these students.
The following members will be competing at the National Level: Anna Horrell and Jessica Treadway – 2nd place Buying and Merchandising Team Event, Lauren Brigman and Jesse Davis – 2nd place Hospitality Services Team Event. Aaron Welch, Issac Justus, and Aaron Rapp qualified as event finalists and have the opportunity to attend the Leadership Development Academy at the National Competition. At competition, students must complete a 100-question multiple choice exam along with a comprehensive role play with a judge. The following students received medals for top ten exam and/or role play scores: Top 10 Exam Score: Lauren Brigman, Jesse Davis, and Isaac Justus. Top 10 Role Play Score: Jerry Chandler, Garrett Cuthbertson, Isaac Justus, Daniel Moore, Aaron Rapp, and Aaron Welch. Lauren Brigman also received the Sonya Dismuke Scholarship.
The DECA chapter would like to extend a thank you to all community members who attended the successful Barbecue Fundraiser at the Wagon Wheel on February 21st. Fundraising efforts are currently underway as the National Competition attendees anticipate an overall cost of $8,000.000 to travel to Anaheim. The DECA Chapter will host a Prom Fashion Show on Thursday, March 19th, at 6:30 pm in the Madison High School Little Theatre. Tickets are $3.00 each or two for $5.00 and can be purchased at the door. Prizes such as restaurant gift certificates and a free prom hair and make-up appointment will be raffled. The chapter will also host a Fish Fry at The Café located in the Hayes Run Plaza, beside Madison Funeral Home, tenatively set for Sunday, March 29th from 2-5 pm. Plates include fish, hushpuppies, and coleslaw and are $7.00 each.

FFA Hosted Its Annual Member Cookout

On Friday February 20th, 2009 FFA hosted its annual member cookout during all 4th lunches which was free and open to all FFA members and then that afternoon The chapter hosted the movie I Am Legend which was voted on by all the members that attended the club meeting on the (uh….Not really sure what the date was of the club day). The cookout was a very large success with having roughly half or maybe more of the chapter to come down and eat up the opportunity that was due to Mr. Chuck Michels and Mr. Harvey Franklin and the chapter officers along with the Movie night put on by them as well.

Madison High “Builds” Future for Students

Although students are currently scrambling to find parking spaces near the vocational building of Madison High, the benefits of the new construction project will become evident very soon. The project began last week with the pouring of a 72- by 48-foot concrete foundation located in the front parking lot. It will soon become the groundwork for a metal building which the construction and masonry classes will use to build modular homes.
Mr. Brad Franklin and Mr. Joe Davis are the instructors of the construction and masonry classes who received a $35,000 grant written by Madison County Schools Superintendent, Dr. Ronald Wilcox, to fund this project. The projected completion date is Spring of 2009, with construction of the next residential home beginning next fall. There are many positive things which will come of this new development. The construction and masonry classes will be able to have class inside the building, while the metal structure will keep all materials and the students protected from the weather. Mr. Davis says it might be a possibility to “try to write more grants for electrical, lighting, heating and other features for the homes.”
The construction companies who will be making this project a reality are Cooper Construction, and Concrete Works and Construction Outfit of Hendersonville, a subcontracting company. Mr. Franklin says the work provided by these companies has been “very professional” with fast and efficient progress. With the construction of the metal building the students will now complete more than one modular home per year. It took the students less than one semester to build the last home, bought by the county to be used for a clinic located behind Madison Middle School. Mr. Franklin says that the students will be adding 40 feet to the clinic to incorporate additional rooms and laboratories. The next home built by the construction department will be bought by the Madison County Housing Authority states Mr. Franklin. Future projects for the construction and masonry classes include residential homes for which anyone may place a bid.
The reason behind the new project comes from complications which occurred while building the previous modular home. The height of the building became a problem during transportation of the structure. Therefore, the new metal building will allow for the roof-cap to be left off the home until after transport. The only negative aspect is that parking for some students has been taken during the construction process and the parking lot will have to be re-aligned after completion of the construction.
Sophomore Blake Brigman, who is one of the students involved in building the previous home, says that the new structure will allow students to “work regardless of weather conditions which will make building go a lot faster.” The students who work on completing the projects only work during class time during school hours. Mr. Davis says the task of building a residential home in less than 90 days spending 90 minutes each day is a great accomplishment. Mr. Franklin hopes that this new structure will provide a substantial opportunity “for hands-on construction training,” which will broaden the realm of vocational instruction for all students.

Childcare Center

-The children in the childcare center recently had a visit from a Naturalist from W.N.C. Nature Center. The children participated in the program Fur, Feathers and Scales. The objective of the program is to teach about the different coverings animals have on their bodies. Since the students have been participating in a unit of study about Birds, there was a special emphasis on bird feathers, beaks and feet. This was trully a fun filled day of learning!

-As part of the Bird Unit children in the childcare center will be working with students in Mr. Brad Franklin's class to buiild Bluebird nestboxes. In an effort to protect Bluebirds we will place the nestboxes around campus so that the birds can feed and nest in safety. As part of the project we will maintain the nextboxes and create a Bluebird sancuary. This is a great opportunity for our high school students to work with our childcare children.

Each of you need 3 hours or more of volunteer hours. To fulfill this requirement please write up a proposal of what you wish to do. It needs to be either community or educationally related. It can not be something you are getting credit for in another group. Each opportunity must be pre approved.

On Thursday, December 18th, the Madison High FFA Chapter held their 3rd Annual Winter Awards Banquet, hosted by the Junior FFA Officer team. There were approximately 120 members and guests present to recognize regional and state contest participants and other special awards. The evening started in the Madison High School cafeteria with a covered-dish supper, provided by the guests. During supper, entertainment was provided by FFA members. Afterwards, everyone proceeded to the Little Theater where the banquet continued. Once everyone was seated, guest speakers Tony Tipton, the principal of Madison High School, and Ross Young, the Madison County Extension Director, presented remarks on the quality and success of Madison County. Throughout the banquet, entertainment provided by FFA members divided the segments of awards. Certificates and t-shirts were given to the teams recognized for their participation in different regional and state competitions. First, the Regional competitions were acknowledged. The Senior Land Judging team was recognized for placing 1st in the region, along with the individuals who competed as alternates. The Senior and Junior Forestry Evaluation teams placed 1st at the Regional competition as well, and there were two students that went to compete as alternates. After the regional competitions, the teams that competed at the State level were announced. The Senior and Junior Dairy Evaluation teams both placed 5th in the State. The Senior Parliamentary Procedure team placed 1st in the State competition at the State FFA Convention this past June. The Agricultural Issues team placed 2nd in the State. Also, at the State FFA Convention, the Creed Speaker placed 4th. In the Prepared Public Speaking event, the competitor placed 2nd. The contestants in the Introduction to Horticulture and Quiz Bowl events were also acknowledged for their participation at State Convention. The were several Proficiency awards givens out. The Beef Production and Diversified Horticulture Proficiency award areas were both awarded 3rd at the State level. The Proficiency for Floriculture placed 2nd and the Nursery Operations Proficiency was awarded 1st place in the State. There were also special awards given to members and others that helped to support the Madison FFA Chapter throughout the year. Greenhand Degrees were given to more than 20 active first year members who met the requirements to receive the Degree. There were also approximately 20 Chapter Degrees given to active second year members. Certificates of Appreciation were given to adults outside of the Madison FFA Chapter for their support throughout the year. After all of the awards, a video was presented on the ‘Season in Review.’

Early Childhood Education classes visited AB-Tech Asheville Campus

The students in Mrs. Flemming’s Early Childhood Education classes visited AB-Tech Asheville Campus on Friday, Dec.5. The purpose of the trip was for the students to visit AB-Tech’s childcare center to note the similarities and differences in childcare centers. The students also met with Cathy Cody, director of AB-Tech’s Early Childhood Education program. Cathy discussed career opportunities available to students going into the early childhood education profession and the programs that are available at AB-Tech. After the visit, students enjoyed an entertaining lunch at Ichiban Japanese Restaurant. A special thank you to Carla Franklin for being a chaperone and driving the activity bus. We had a blast!

Tis the season to remember others who could use our help. The clubs are collecting toys, canned foods or money for Operation Santa. This is for families in Madison County. It is our goal to collect $2 per student or a toy. The athletic department will be donating $1 from each ticket sold at the December 9th basketball games. We are excited to try to surpass last year's toy drive. We will be sending students around with buckets on Thursday, Monday, Wednesday and Friday (next week). The toy drive will last through Dec. 12th. Please encourage your students to participate. There will be a toy box located in the library.

Madison High FFA Dairy Evaluation teams competed at the State Dairy Judging competition in Rowan County.

On Tuesday, November 18th, the Madison High FFA Dairy Evaluation teams competed at the State Dairy Judging competition in Rowan County. The Senior team, consisting of Katie Terry, Ben Rice, Dean Fox, and Samantha Kindred placed first in the Western Region and fifth in the State overall. The senior team placed first in oral reasons with Katie Terry as the high scorer in oral reasons. The junior team, including Bill Jones, Jennifer Hensley, Myra Franklin, and Kaitlyn Lisenbee also placed first in the Region and fifth in the State. Bill Jones was high scorer in oral reasons for the junior division and the team placed third in the state in oral reasons. Both teams will be recognized for their accomplishments at teh Western Region FFA Rally in April.

Madison FFA Takes All at Regional Forestry Competition

On Tuesday, October 7th, the Madison FFA traveled to Brevard in order to compete in the Regional Forestry Competition. A total of ten members represented Madison FFA at the contest, including Matthew Ray, Daniel Alvey, Dean Fox, Jennifer Hensley, Katie Terry, Daniel Franklin, Ashley Mace, Hannah Robinson, Jesse Coomer, and Hannah Cutshall. Both the senior and junior team took first place in the Western Region against 27 other FFA Chapters from the region that competed. During the contest, participants are asked to identify 20 different species of trees, decide which trees to cut for timber marking and pulpwood, and figure sawtimber estimation. Ashley Mace was high scorer in the contest, Matthew Ray and Dean Fox tied for third overall, and Daniel Alvey placed forth overall. The Senior Forestry team will move on to compete again at the State Convention in June.

On Saturday, November 8th, the Madison High FFA Dairy Evaluation teams traveled to Louisville, Kentucky for the North American International Livestock Exposition. The Senior team, consisting of Katie Terry, Ben Rice, Dean Fox, and Samantha Kindred, competed on Sunday morning in the Dairy Judging competition. During the contest, the participants watched and placed ten classes of dairy cattle, a class of cows and a class of heifers for each of the following breeds: Holstein, Jersey, Brown Swiss, Guernsey, and Ayrshire. After viewing all of the classes, the Senior team prepared three sets of oral reasons to present to judges on Guernsey, Jersey, and Holstein cows. A couple of members of the Junior team, Bill Jones and Jennifer Hensley, also attended the Exposition. Both teams will travel to the State FFA Dairy Evaluation competition in Salisbury on November 18th.

Madison FFA Competes at Regional Land Evaluation Competition
On Wednesday, November 5th, the Madison High FFA Land Judging team traveled to Haywood County to participate in the Regional Land Evaluation competition. The Senior team, consisting of Daniel Alvey, Chris Mackey, Ben Rice, and Kendra Norton, placed first in the Western Region and Federation. During the competition, participants are asked to judge the soil characteristics, recommend appropriate land treatments, and decided on urban uses and environmental concerns. Kendra Norton was third high scorer in the contest. Two freshman members, Hannah Robinson and Hali Russell, went to compete as alternates. The team will move on to the State Land competition in April.

A Day at Biltmore

November 5th found five Madison High School students and five Madison County Early College High School students traveling to the Biltmore Estate for the 2nd annual R.A.V.E. Student Leadership Academy. The Academy took place in the Lionscrest facility located next door to the Deer Park restaurant. Students were welcomed by Mr. Bill Cecil, Jr., President and CEO of The Biltmore Company.

Students were treated to a tour of several Biltmore enterprises including barn operations and food & beverage operations at the Deer Park. Mrs. Kathy Toler from AB-Technical Community College lead attendees through an entertaining and interactive session on business etiquette. The session covered topics ranging from appropriate personal hygiene and dress, to correct introduction sequence, to formal table settings and manners. Students also experienced a Public Speaking session led by Ms. Leanne Ruff of Blue Ridge Community College. Ms. Ruff not only addressed the importance of this often fear-inducing activity, she also conducted a fun contest which required students to deliver a short impromptu speech.

Lunch was served on the veranda with school law attorney, Chris Campbell of Roberts and Stevens Law Firm, serving as the keynote speaker. Students were joined by Madison County School Superintendent, Dr. Ron Wilcox. Following lunch, students reconvened in the main ballroom and discovered the career opportunities available at the Biltmore Estate. Students were allowed time to discuss internship opportunities with Biltmore employees representing 10 different career areas. Wendy Edney, Western Regional CTE Coordinator for NCDPI, visited Madison High School on Monday, November 10. In her first year as a Regional Coordinator, Edney’s visit was designed to introduce her to the CTE faculty and programs offered at Madison High School and Madison Middle School.

The morning started with a brief overview of our CTE programs and a tour of the CTE classrooms on the upper level of the CTE wing at MHS. Mrs. Edney and Mrs. Cuthbertson were then joined by Dr. Tipton for a discussion of current CTE and state-wide issues.

The tour continued with a visit to the Agriculture Education department, then on to the Metals Mfg. department. A working lunch was held at Central Office with Dr. Wilcox, Dr. Tipton, Mrs. Edney, and Mrs. Cuthbertson. The focus of the lunch discussion centered around North Carolina’s new Graduation Requirements and their impact and effect on Career & Technical Education.

Mrs. Edney was disappointed that, due to time constraints, she was unable to visit the remaining high school and middle school programs. She looks forward to returning soon to complete the tour.

Mrs. Edney was very complimentary of our programs and our faculty.

The FFA Citrus Sale

The FFA Citrus sale will be running form November 8th to November 21st, 2008.

We will be selling Tangelos, Juice & Navel Oranges, Grape Fruit, Pennsylvania Red & Golden delicious apples, peck and half peck fruit baskets and frazer fir wreaths.

Taneglos, Juice & Navel Oranges, and Grape fruit are all $22 dollars for a whole box and $11 for a half box.

The apples are $26 dollars a whole box and $13 for a half box.

The Peck fruit baskets are $18 dollars and the half peck are $14.

The Frazer fir wreaths are $24 dollars.

If there are to many rotten fruit in your box for you rliking or it's more than half rotten you can get your money back gurantee or you can trade the box you got for another one.

You pay for your fruit when you pick it up in the Ag Shop on December 3rd-5th, from 7AM to 8PM.

It is important that we maintain control of our classroom behavior and instructional time. If it is not important to US (as teachers) that class-time is used wisely and productively EVERYDAY, we cannot expect it to be important to our students. In the hour and a-half that we have our students, they often come to emulate our attitudes. Expect and Encourage the Best your students have to give. Let them see you showing respect to your fellow teachers' time, space, talents and ideas. Let them see you showing respect to your curriculum area and to your career. As you are dealing with and speaking to your students, ask yourself if you are doing so in a way that you would want your own child dealt with and spoken to. Mutual Respect goes a long way.Our greatest asset in the Madison County School's CTE Department is YOU, our faculty. You are all highly skilled, competent and very valuable teachers. Do not short-change yourself or your students by allowing the mid-semester blahs to settle in. Madison FFA Hosts the Western Region FFA Fall Leadership Conference

On Tuesday, August 30th the Fall Leadership Conference for the Western FFA Region was held at Madison High School. Schools from all around the region traveled to Madison for the Conference. There was an outstanding attendance of approximately 330 FFA members, advisors, and guests present that afternoon. The entire Regional FFA Officer team was able to present to all of the FFA members that attended the Conference. The current Regional FFA team consists of Christopher Mackey, who serves as the President, Stuart Beam, the Vice President, Wilma Metcalf, the Secretary, Madelyn Johnson, the Treasurer, Rebekah Henderson, who serves as Reporter, and Katrina Hoover, the Sentinel. The team paired up and presented several workshops based on different leadership topics, including activities related to the subject for the members to participate in. Several officers from the State FFA Officer team, including Courtney Clapp, the President, and Ray Spence and Matthew Greene, who serve as Vice Presidents, joined the Western FFA Region in learning about different qualities that leaders possess. They also worked on a presentation to give to the Regional members.
In general, the Fall Leadership Conference was a huge success, a lot of fun, and a great opportunity for those able to attend.

Madison High School Childcare Program

My son is enrolled in the childcare program this year. So far, his class has had visits from the local fire department, Mission EMS, and the Forest Service. He loved getting to see the fire truck and meeting the firemen. He came home with a little red plastic fireman’s helmet which he wore the rest of the evening. He knows what an ambulance is now and is quick to tell me when he sees one on the road. The forest service ranger introduced the kids to Smokey the Bear. The ranger gave each kid in his class a comic book about fire safety and Smokey the Bear. We have read it together. It is great that he is getting all this safety education in childcare. Madison High School Childcare truly goes the extra mile to see that the kids have a broad range of experiences.

Big Success & Big Fun at Madison’s Annual Fun For All Olympics

On Monday, September 15th, the Madison High FFA held its annual Fun For All Olympics at the Madison County Ball Fields. For the first time the event was open to the entire Western FFA Region. There was a large turnout of over 250 FFA members from Madison High, North Buncombe Middle, North Buncombe High, Mountain Heritage High, Tuscola High and Pisgah High School. There were several activities for the students to participate in, ranging from an obstacle course to sponge tag. Other fun games available for the FFA members to take part in were line dancing, softball, kickball, and water balloon volleyball. Supper was also served by the Madison FFA The evening ended with a splash as the members sped down the 60 foot long water slide that was created by students of Madison High School. Mountain Heritage provided a mechanical bull for members to ride and enjoy. The first regional FFA Olympics was a huge success. Please join us on Tuesday, September 30th Madison High will be host to the Regional FFA Fall Leadership Conference, all FFA members are welcome to attend.

Record Turnout at FFA Horse Show

Madison High FFA held a very successful Horse Show on Saturday, August 30th with possible record-breaking attendance. It was a very busy and exciting day for everyone who joined in on the fun. There were plenty of events to compete in or watch, horses to ride, and delicious food to eat. A special thank you goes out to all who worked to make sure that the show went smoothly. TSA's first stream pickup of 2008-2009 was a success. The group managed in two hours to collect 12 bag of trash, 2 tires, and a assortments of scrap metal.

The area focused on was between the Capitola Dam and Blanahasset Island in Marshall along the French Broad River. We would like to thank the folks who participated and especially Ms. Novak for joining in.

International Tree Planting Day

Our contribution to the International Tree Planting Day (22 Sept 08 - the fall equinox) was a success with the help of Mr. Harvey Franklin's Environmental Studies and Natural Resource Management Class at Madison High School, the organization of Jennifer Edwards and Russell Blevins at USDA, and the generosity of Jenkins Nursery in Mars Hill. The Dawn Redwood was placed near the front of the school to fill in a needed gap along the school walking trail on the hill near the entrance as well as an aid to identification differences of similar common deciduous conifer. Our participation allowed us to join students all over the world yesterday in a small contribution to caring for the environment and international cooperation.
